As one of the most popular props for movies, TV shows, and theatrical presentations, prop guns have a long history of use in show business. From tiny pistols to large hunting rifles and machine guns, these fake firearms are hugely popular in film productions. But what are prop firearms? And why are they so popular?   Prop weapons have been around since the early 20th century, but didn't really become a mainstay of Hollywood until the mid-1980s. During this period, filmmakers and TV producers began using props to advance a film's storyline.   Blank guns are firearms without ammunition that are typically used for training and demonstrations. Blank guns are modern firearms with open chambers; they fire controlled air instead of ball ammunition, which is why most modern handguns and rifles have open chambers.  It was designed to be used for testing the operation of all parts of the weapon without having to use lethal ammunition. Currently, blank guns are used for many purposes, such as self-defense, gun range training, improving short-range accuracy, recreation, historical reenactment, and to fire blank cartridges to start motor vehicles. In addition to gunpowder, some "blanks" are sometimes loaded with other explosives to produce an explosive effect.
