Crossbows are relatively new to hunting. To see them in action, watch any movie or TV show featuring archery or shooting. The first types of these weapons were developed around 1250 AD, when they replaced the traditional bow and arrow in combat. They can fire projectiles at incredible speeds, because they use a system of pulleys to transfer power from the bow string to the projectile via a flexible bow arm which is typically powered by an elastic rubber band known as a "slingshot". Swinging the bow arm back with much force increases the tension on the elastic rubber band which then stores up potential energy for release upon being pulled back once more by further tension on it.
